"Device Manager" on remote Vista machine.
HelloI am trying to connect with "Administrative Tools>Computer Management" on a remote Vista (Enterprise) machine, the connection is established successfully but when i try to enter on "Device Manager" it fails with the error:Unable to access the computer AVISTA.Make sure that this computer is on the network, has remote administration enabled, and is running the "Plug and Play" and "Remote Registry" services. The error was: Access is Denied. Both services are running, connected with valid credentials.Configuration:- machine 1 (that starts the connection with Computer Management) I tried with Windows 2000 server SP4, Windows XP, SP1, SP2, Windows Vista Enterprise, etc.- machine 2 (that I am connecting to from machine 1 ) is Windows Vista Enterprise.- connection is local ethernet, SMB connection works, browsing the HKLM on machine 2 with registry connection works, even "Administrative Tools>Computer Management" connection works because i can see the NT services on the remote machine. Everything works but "Device Manager" ... wich is very important to me I would gladly appreciate any advice. Thanks.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/server_core/archive/2008/01/14/configuring-the-firewall-for-remote-management-of-a-workgroup-server-core-installation.aspx Found this via a link on a forum at Vistaheads - http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windows-vista-networking-sharing/15007-accessing-remote-device-manager.html. It's specifically referencing Server Core 2008, but I've tested it with Windows 7 Pro, and it works. The relevant part is the enabling of remote access to the PnP interface, but the article either has a typo, or Server 08 and Vista have a slightly different structure (I don't have either available to check out, at the moment), since the "Device Installation" branch is inside the System branch. So, to reivse that technet article, what you'll have to do, in addition to what you've already done: 1. gpedit.msc 2. Computer Config\Administrative Templates\System\Device Installation 3. Change the "Allow remote access to the PnP interface" option to Enabled. 4. Reboot 5. Profit :) I imagine this would work at the domain level as a GPO, as well, but haven't had the opportunity to test it yet.
